Merge updates to a fileset with FileSet Magic
Summary:
This knowledge base article describes the steps to use fileset merge feature in FilesetMagic to merge an update directly to the existing fileset. An example for when this might be useful is when you need to deploy a software update for a software package that is currently controlled by FileWave. Deploying software updates to client machines using pkg fileset can cause the changes to revert back if the software fileset files are set to self heal.
Procedure:
FileWave Default TCP Listening Port Usage
FileWave TCP/IP Port Usage
By default the FileWave software listens on the TCP/IP ports listed below. These are the defaults and they can be configured to listen on different ports if required.
FileWave Client Ports
20010 TCP/IP for monitor-client communication
FileWave Server Ports
20015 TCP/IP for server-client communication
20017 TCP/IP for server-client secure (SSL) communication
20016 TCP/IP for admin-server communication
Store the FileWave Server/Booster data on a separate volume
Many customers have asked us if there's a way to store their Server's data on a non-startup volume or on network shares ( AFP Shares for Mac or CIFS Shares for windows) . In in this posting you find instructions for linking the Server Data Folder to another location on OS X, and Windows. You may follow these same steps for the Booster, accounting for small differences in folder names.

Migrate the FileWave Server to new Hardware
To migrate the FileWave server from one machine to another, use the following procedure:
Superprefs for Windows
If you are using FileWave 4.x or higher, you can use SuperPrefsEditor as described in the FileWave User Manual ( it can be found in the download page ).
Change Booster Settings in Client prefrences
If you are using FileWave 4.x or higher, you can use SuperPrefsEditor as described in the FileWave User Manual (it can be found in the download page).
If you need to change booster settings in multiple clients prefrences, here is a script that can do it.
Deploying Security Patches and Service Packs
FileWave can deploy Windows security patches and service packs cleanly and efficiently, requiring no user interaction or disturbance. FileWave version 5.5 or later has the Software Update feature that can apply Windows Updates to your clients.
Security Patches (or Service Packs) can cause problems if you use FileSet WinMagic. The problem occurs when a Patch modifies registry keys outside the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software directory (this is the only part of the registry FileWave currently captures).
FileWave Client on Windows XP not reporting software updates to FileWave Server
FileWave Clients running on Windows XP have a dependency for a certain Windows update patch to be installed. Without this patch installed the FileWave Client's software update feature (new in version 5.5.) will not work correctly.
The error as seen in the FileWave Client's log file will be
FATAL|MSSoftwareUpdate::fileWaveUpdateServiceId: failed to create the update service manager
The Microsoft patch that needs to be installed is KB898461. Details and download of the patch are available from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898461
