Adobe CS4 Fileset Creation (OS X)

Pre-install steps

  1. If you are going to be running Microsoft Office on the same machines as Adobe CS4, it is best to first install Microsoft Office on your fileset creation machine before taking the first Fileset Magic snapshot.  This is because CS4 will install a plugin if it detects Microsoft Office on the machine which you will want included in your fileset.  If it is not included, and it is deployed to a machine with Microsoft Office, it may ask for an admin password prompt upon application start.

Fileset Creation Steps

  1. Please create a snapshot using XMagic on a system where no adobe products are preinstalled.
  2. Run the Adobe CS4 installer. Install all components youd like to deploy later.
  3. Once the installation is finished run the "Adobe updater" to update all your installed components to the latest version. After the update we recommend you to visit the AutoUpdater preferences and uncheck 'Automatically Check for Adobe Updates.'
  4. Once the updates are installed run each application; I suggest starting with Photoshop. Make sure each app runs properly. Select 'Don't Register' from the dropdown menu during the registration pop-up. Be sure to run the Adobe Media player, as it causes a separate Adobe AIR update (not done by Adobe Updater).
  5. Then Create a fileset from the snapshot that has been created in point 1.
  6. Once the fileset is created open the file set.

7 ) You will see "Prefrences", "Caches", "ColorSync", "Logs" and "Application Support" folders under Users --> Administrator --> Library.

Expand the library folder and Move all the folders i.e "Application Support", "Caches", "ColorSync", "Logs" and "Prefrences" from Users --> Administrator --> Library, to Users --> All Users --> Library

(This is a screen shot for the Documents folder, which was not opened in the screen shot above.)

At the end your fileset should look like one in the above screen shot.

8 ) There are two files in the fileset in /private/etc/cups named "printers.conf" and "printers.conf.O". Delete these two files.

Please set these two files to download if missing.

/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PCD/pcd.db
/Library/Preferences/FLEXnet Publisher/FLEXnet/adobe_00080000_tsf.data

There is an Acrobat license file in /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PCD/Cache/cache.db. Please set this file as well to "Download if Missing"

Now this is the fileset that you deploy to the clients.

After the client has the fileset and you check that all the applications are working fine, we need to send a script to clients for creating the adobe printer. In Point 8 we removed the two files because if we execute these two files they will overwrite "printers.conf" and "printers.conf.O" in /etc/cups, hence will delete all the default printers the system had or if any printers you configured in that client. To avoid this we have created a script that will add the adobe printer after the cs4 fileset has been deployed.

The script can be downloaded from below:
addprinter.sh

Note : The Adobe PDF Printer is not available or is unusable in Mac OS X Snow Leopard (v10.6). This situation is due to security features in Snow Leopard that disable the Adobe PDF Printer. Adobe Acrobat 9.1 Pro removes the Adobe PDF Printer and adds a new Save As Adobe PDF command. Customers using earlier versions of Adobe Acrobat in Snow Leopard cannot use the Adobe PDF Printer.

Important notice when deploying CS4 together with CS3
If you have separate fielsets of CS3 and CS4 you go to deploy together to a machine, you must set following file to download if missing in the CS4 fileset, in order to get both suites working.

/Library/Application Support/Adobe/caps/caps.db

Cheers!!!!
